I think what works the most about this is intimidation factor. The fact that the wings are shadowed forces us to look towards the center. Her bright neck leads to an angry eye, which is embolden by eyeliner and even more shadow. Also, the colors of the mane don't seem quite as soft as they do on the show. Perhaps that's because they're in stark contrast to the dark black and red background, but they come across as loud and alarming. Whatever the case, it makes for a huge difference between the hair and where it meets her darkened face, which is the place where the eye retreats to, only to get her stern gaze. Also, those are some of the best teeth I've seen on a pony ever.

That said, I still think the mane is going all sorts of crazy. It's a little hard to tell if she's leering away from us or towards us. Also, you got a lot of empty red space towards the top right of the pic. I suppose that's inevitable.

Er... What I mean to say is...
